Description: The book is in French. Published by Bouchard-Huzard. It is Volume 1 of a two volume set. I do not have volume 2. Quarter leather covers are sound with just some minor damage – see photos. Four raised bands on the spine. Nice green patterned endpapers. The book is solidly bound with nothing missing or loose. This is an ex library book – Leicester Polytechnic – now De Montfort University. Library marks to the spine, the top block and the page opposite the contents page. All are shown in the photos. The reverse of the front endpaper has some writing and a label and the page opposite has the remains of where a piece of paper had been attached. Again shown in the photos. Otherwise the book is in lovely condition throughout. No other writing or annotations or marks. This is a catalogue of engravings by French painters and draughtsmen born in the eighteenth century. For each artist, there is a brief biographical sketch followed by a list of that artist's engravings, with a detailed description of the scenes depicted. The engravings listed are generally reproductions of the painters' own works; nineteenth-century collectors, especially in France, would have sought out these engravings in lieu of the paintings themselves as a way of gaining a better understanding of the artist's disegno (design or conception), which was considered more important than the execution. This is a very clean and sound copy which has been very well looked after. A lovely old book. It would grace any library or bookshelf. I have a collection of other old and antiquarian books for sale.
