Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) THE TOWN HALL, LEEDS.The name of this town seems to have descended from Cerdic's ancient British kingdom of Loidis. Cloth-weaving was first introduced into Leeds by Flemish immigrants about 1330, and since that date Yorkshire has more and more become the centre of the woollen industry. The population is now about 400,000. The town possesses a public park of 350 acres, almost unequalled among provincial cities. It is also distinguished by noble institutions, amongst which the Yorkshire College may be named; and by fine public buildings, of which we select the Town Hall in Victoria Square. This was opened by the Queen in 1858. It contains a public hall 162 by 72 feet, with a splendid organ built for use in the Musical Festivals. In the open space in front are the statues erected in memory of the Duke of Wellington and Sir Robert Peel.
