Description: Miller, B. L., 125, Limestones of Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania Geological Survey, 4th ser., Bulletin M 7, 367 p. Classic earlier work on Pennsylvania limestones by B. Miller. The primary purpose of this report was to furnish information concerning the limestones of Pennsylvania to people or firms interested in their utilization. The author drew upon published and manuscript reports of other geologists and his own fieldwork to give the general characteristics of limestone areas within the state. The first part of the report describes limestones, including their chemical and mineral compositions, physical characteristics, origin, weathering, uses, and geologic and geographic distribution in Pennsylvania. The second part of the report is organized by county, describing the limestone units for each county. Benjamin Miller, 1874-1944, promoted, guided, and led geology at Lehigh University for 37 years. One of his preeminent publications was the Northampton County Geology Bulletin of 1939. Although Miller was a geologist, the Northampton County Bulletin is extensive, covering historical development, culture, toponymy, meteorology, industrial development, and all phases of geology. Miller's specialty was economic geology; consequently the coverage of the metallic and non-metallic deposits is presented in invaluable detail. Many of these deposits were actively worked during Miller's tenure as the geologic authority of the Lehigh Valley. His writings reflect the ready access he had to private properties and his skill at observing and recording geologic relations. Softbound. Poor condition. Covers damaged and detached. Water damage to pages 327-367. Large map in rear pocket water damaged. However, most of the report is in good readable condition. Shipping is by U.S. Postal Service Media Mail.
