Description: Limoges B&H Blakeman & Henderson Plate 11 7/8" Hand Painted Red w/Gold 1900-1914 Elegant Decorative 11 7/8" PLATE from B&H (Blakeman & Henderson) Limoges, France, HAND PAINTED by a Talented Artist, Beautiful PINK & PURPLE FLORAL w/GREEN & RAISED GOLD LEAVES, GOLD Trim on Scalloped & Embossed Rim, circa 1900-1914 DESCRIPTION: This plate was designed in a very classic pattern with hand painted pink and purple flowers by a talented artist. There are green leaves, raised gold leaves and grey ghost ferns to give depth to the painting. There is gold outlining on most of the flowers and highlights of raised white paint on the pink flowers. The overall quality of the design is quite professional. The rim is scalloped and embossed with a bold, gold trim which accents the scalloping and embossing. The back of the plate is the high white of the porcelain. CONDITION: While this charger is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects and only very minor damage. The raised handles on the front show wear where someone carried the plate with their thumb resting on the gold. Look at photos #9 & #10 to see the 5/8" smooth flake on the interior of the rim of the foot. There are no other chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. There is no wear to the paint and almost no wear to the gold on the rim. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 11 7/8" and a height of 1 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Blakeman & Henderson were not manufacturers or decorators of porcelain, but rather were importers in New York City of high quality decorated porcelain exclusively from Limoges, France. They operated in the 1892-1912 era. The B&H exporter’s mark on this plate was used until 1912 according to Marks4Ceramics (a paid website for dating porcelain). Mary Frank Gaston in her book, Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd Edition, states “Porcelain carrying the Blakeman & Henderson marks is always superbly decorated.” Gaston cites red mark #1 as used in the early 1900’s. Gaston also cites the green mark as the Coiffe 7 point Star mark #2 in Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia Of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition, as used 1891-1914. This seems to date this plate to the 1900-1914 time period. L. Coiffe founded the prolific Limoges porcelain factory and studio during the mid-1870’s and his son, E. Coiffe, assumed the operation in 1887 continuing until the mid-1920’s. Porcelain bearing the Coiffe white ware mark and an exporter mark were most likely decorated in house at the Coiffe studio.
