Description: Limoges T&V Creamer Open Sugar Hand Painted by Stouffer Artist TM Jel 1906-1907 Limoges T&V Handled Creamer & Sugar Set 1911 Artist E.M. Gold Wheat & Ribbons Beautiful T&V (Tressemann & Vogt) DECORATIVE Fine China Handled CREAMER & SUGAR Set, Striking Hand Painted GOLD & SILVER FLOWERS outlined in BLACK, GOLD Trim on Rims & solid GOLD on Handles, Artist Signed TM Jel for Thomas M. Jelinek, 1906-1907 from Limoges, France DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has colors that are bright and vivid. This is painted on a blank of white fine china. The flowers have silver petals outlined in black with gold dots in the centers & are tastefully done. The gold design below the flowers also has the black outlining. (In the photos, the silver petals appear black, but they are not.) The handles are painted in a solid gold and the rims are trimmed in gold. This set was painted by a Stouffer Studio artist, TM Jel, who signed the creamer, but obviously painted both pieces. TM Jel is Thomas M Jelinek who worked for Pickard China before moving to Stouffer. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, it is in superb condition. We can find no chips, cracks, hairlines, nicks, rubbings or repairs. There is very minor age-appropriate gold wear to one handle on the creamer. See photo #10 which magnifies the wear. There appears to be no crazing. See the photos. The lack of utensil scratches attests to the high quality of the fine china. The decorative set is beautiful and classically decorated. DIMENSIONS: The creamer is 4 1/4" handle to spout and a height of 5 5/8" to the top of the handle. The sugar is 5 1/4" handle to handle and a height of 3 3/4" to the top of the handles. The width on the creamer is 2 1/4" while the open sugar has a width of 2 1/2". HISTORY/MARKS: Begun in the 1850's, Vogt & Dose became Tressemann & Vogt when Emillien Tressemann joined the company in 1882. This was essentially a decorating studio which began manufacturing their own china in 1891 in Limoges, France. The company continued until it was dissolved due to the retirement of Tressemann in 1907. From 1907-1919, the company operated as Porcelain Gustave Vogt under the direction of Gustave Vogt, John Vogt's son, and continued to use the T&V mark. T&V is well known for its quality whiteware and boldly decorated hand paintings. The marks used on this set are the manufacturers mark in green referenced in Mary Frank Gaston's Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition as mark #7 on both the creamer and sugar. The oval bottom on the sugar is larger allowing Stouffer Studio to apply their mark. In addition, the creamer is artist signed TM Jel. TM Jel is Thomas M Jelinek who worked for Pickard China before moving to Stouffer. Alan B. Reed’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Pickard China identifies this as the Stouffer red mark #4 used 1906-1914. This narrows the time period to 1906-1907. Jacob H. Stouffer first appeared in Chicago in 1892 and worked in a number of companies in sales and management positions until 1902 when he established his business as J.H. Stouffer Co. brokering for other china manufacturers. In 1905, he opened his first china decorating studio in South Side of Chicago. Coincidentally, this is the same year that Wilder Pickard opened Ravenswood Studio on the North Side of Chicago. Stouffer died in 1912 and the studio was carried on by his younger brother, Charles P. until the company was sold in about 1943 and ceased operations in 1952. After the Great Depression by 1933, only 7 decorating studios remained in the china decorating business in the Greater Chicago area with Stouffer being second only to Pickard in size.
