From the Abstract: ABSTRACT: Living Life After Encountering the Light:A Phenomenological Study Exploring the Meaning of a Near-Death Experience This dissertation investigates the question, "What is the meaning of the near-death experience?" The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the meaning of a transcendental NDE for ten adult survivors, as they reflected upon the impact ofthe experience. The guidelines for participant selection dictated that the NDE occurred after the age of fifteen, was the result of a medical crisis, and occurred at least one year prior to the interview. An extensive review of the literature revealed that no previous systematic study of this nature exists. The data was obtained through lengthy, open-ended interviews. A qualitative research design andphenomenological methodology employed the following processes: epoche, phenomenological reduction, eidetic variation, and synthesis. The analysis of the data revealed five core themes of the meaning of a near-death experience: The co-researcher's identified: 1) A knowing of the Light/Source/God; 2) An absence of fear related to death and dying; 3) An enhanced relationship with self and others;4) A clarified purpose for living life, and 5) An expansion of intuitive and psychic abilities. A summary of the research, the distinguishing results and limitations ofthe study, suggestions for future studies, implications, professional applications, and, a personal reflection are included.
