Descriptive text from separate pages at the back which cannot be supplied (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used)THE LONG SAULT RAPIDS, CANADA. We here see a passenger steamer running the Long Sault Rapids, which lie upon the upper portion of the Abittibe river, in the Province of Ontario. The picture is characteristic, and gives us a good idea of the splendid type of steamers that are in use upon the Canadian rivers and lakes, and also of the magnificent waterways upon which they ply. The steamer in our illustration is making use of her powerful engines to force her way against the swirl of the heavy current of the river. The French term "Sault," or Leap, is commonly used in Canada to signify the rapids made by the sudden fall in the level of a river. The famous Sault Ste. Marie, connecting Lake Superior with Lake Huron, is now turned by a canal of the same name, upon which shipping can pass without facing the full force of the river current.
