I This listing offers "The Early Years" and "The Modern Era." This collection was offered at Sotheby's New York in 1999 with the catalogues priced at $80. each. The Halper collection was referred to as "The World Series of Collections." Many players of the sport visited his New Jersey home. Friends with several of the game's greats such as Joe DiMaggio, Halper had a one-percent interest in the Yankees at one time. Many of the items shown are unique: The last glove ever worn by Lou Gehrig was auctioned for $400,000. A signed jersey (shown) that Pete Rose wore when he broke Ty Cobb's hit record is in the catalogue. Includes game used jerseys, balls, and gloves, advertising, photos, games, cards, etc. Halper passed in 2005 and the collection was not without controversy. Several items, such as a Joe Jackson jersey were proved to be fakes. A few other items had been stolen from the Baseball Hall of Fame. Still, this is a collection with hundreds of items with known provenance. The fakes speak more to the greed of A FEW dealing in the sports collectible market.
