Larry Niven is an American science fiction writer, best known for his Ringworld series. The Ringworld series is set in a distant future where humanity has spread across the galaxy and encountered numerous alien species. The centerpiece of the series is the Ringworld itself, a colossal artificial ring-shaped structure with a radius roughly equivalent to the distance between the Earth and the Sun. The Ringworld was created by an ancient race known as the Pak Protectors, who are also responsible for the creation of the Pak species, a central element in Niven's Known Space universe. The first novel in the series, "Ringworld," was published in 1970 and won both the Hugo and Nebula awards. It follows the adventures of Louis Wu, a human from Earth, and his companions Teela Brown, a lucky human woman, Nessus, a Pierson's Puppeteer (an alien species with two heads and a cowardly disposition), and Speaker-to-Animals, a Kzin (a felinoid warrior species) as they explore the Ringworld. The subsequent novels in the series, including "The Ringworld Engineers," "The Ringworld Throne," and "Ringworld's Children," explore further adventures and discoveries on the Ringworld, as well as delving into the histories and cultures of the various species inhabiting Niven's universe.
