Description: These were letters received by a woman named Grace Dunbar in Chicago, Illinois, from 1884-1891. I didn't take every letter out, but I found a piece of ribbon, some broken cookies, and doodles on paper, so expect surprises. From the letters I did read, they appear to be updating each other on life (who's sick, who's traveling, random stories, love and adoration, etc.) and I saw letters signed by mother, mama, aunt, Polly, Jessie, Minnie, Callie, Amy, Hattie and Mag. I'd like to help you transport to the historical period and social climate that Grace would have been living among. During the time that the letters were written, the Haymarket Square Riot in Chicago would have happened, Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison would have served as Presidents, the American Federation of Labor would be founded, and the economy would have been experiencing volatility (with the Panic of 1893 happening soon after). Several new states were admitted to the Union, including North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming. The Oklahoma Land Rush took place in 1889, opening up former Native American territories to white settlers. Tragically, the Wounded Knee Massacre would have happened in 1890. It's truly amazing to think of all the things that would have been happening around her, as she lived her life in Chicago. The Statue of Liberty would have been dedicated and Basketball would be first invented. The National American Woman Suffrage Association would be founded and the settlement house movement pioneered. It was the Gilded Age, characterized by rapid economic growth, technological advancement, and social change, but also marked by political corruption and economic inequality. Includes more than 75 pieces, as follows: 64 letters (in envelopes) from 1886-1891 addressed to Grace Dunbar (Chicago IL) and posted in various places, including Clyde OH, South Bend IN, Pittsburgh PA, Fostoria OH, Mount Vernon OH, Sandusky OH, Lima OH, Cleveland OH, Fort Wayne IN, Vernon WI, Prospect Park IL, Chicago IL, and Englewood IL. 1 letter (in envelope) from 1886 addressed to Grace Dunbar (Muncie IN) and posted in Fostoria, Ohio. 2 postal cards from 1891 addressed to Grace Dunbar (Chicago IL) and posted in Fernwood, Illinois. 1 letter (in envelope) from 1887 addressed to Hattie Dunbar (Chicago IL) and posted in Clyde, Ohio. 2 letters (in envelopes) from 1886 addressed to Grace Dunbar (Fostoria, Ohio) and posted in Clyde and Mount Vernon, Ohio. 7 letters (not in envelopes), all from the same time period as the rest of this collection. I included a video that you can watch. My apologies that it's sped up so fast, but 1 minute is the max time allowed for videos and there was a lot to show you.
