BRANDEIS Brandeis handwrote, signed and dated this letter in 1931, apologizing for not contacting a Cott Tyler due to his mother's illness Autograph letter signed: "Louis D. Brandeis", 1p, 4¼x6¾ (folded), on Supreme Court stationery. Dec. 17, 1931. Addressed to J. W. Broude. In full: "Dear Mr. Broude: My thanks for your generous birthday greeting. Cordially". Accompanied by: Unsigned envelope in Brandeis' hand to "Mr. J.W. Broude/Chicago/Ill", 4½x3½. 1931. One 2¢ red-and-white stamp affixed. Western Union Telegraph Company telegram in unknown hand, "Sears Bldg Boston Mass Your telegram received call me up here at three oclock Louis D Brandeis". In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson appointed Louis Dembitz Brandeis (1856-1941) as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Brandeis, the first Jewish Associate Justice, established his reputation of handling cases involving social problems during a year of legal practice in Boston, specialized in labor-management suits and developed the Brandeis brief, still used as a legal reference. Brandeis' support of President Wilson's theory of enforced business competition and his crusade against monopolies led to the passage of the Federal Trade Commission Act (1914) as well as Brandeis' appointment. Until his retirement in 1939 at the age of 82, Brandeis continued to make his mark on the issues of labor, competition, economics and social reform. Letter is lightly toned, soiled and creased. Adhesive remnants on verso. Random ink stains. Folded once horizontally and unfolded. Envelope is lightly toned and creased. Discolored in lower left corner. Neatly torn open at top.
