Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) THE PIER, LOWESTOFT. The most easterly town in England is Lowestoft, which is mentioned in Domesday Book. Later on the harbour got silted up, and was reconstructed in 1831 by Sir William Cubitt at a cost of £80,000. The town has a long sea-front extending over two miles; and the present harbour, belonging to the Great Eastern Railway, is bounded by the two massive piers, each 1,300 feet long. On the North Pier is the fish market, and north of it the Waveney Dock; on the South Pier, here shown, is a handsome pavilion, with concert-hall and reading-rooms. South Lowestoft is the residential district: in the old town, on the seaward side of High Street, are the "Scores," a number of narrow passages like the "rows" of Yarmouth, inhabited by the fishing population.
