LUNDY - PUFFIN ISLAND - SIX MNH STAMP SET w/ UNUSED MOUNTING CIRCULAR

Description: A philatelic promotional item consisting of six MNH stamps of Lundy (Puffin Island) and a mounting circular. Since there is no philatelic album page for Lundy, the circular was intended to be used to mount the stamps and then itself be mounted by a collector on an empty page in their album. Very unique, very nice. You could imagine young philatelists being attracted to this novelty item…and at a price of 50 cents! Those were the days!! The year of issue of the promotion is not identified, but my guess is circa 1950. Lundy is an island in the Bristol Channel of Great Britain. It is not a colony, protectorate, or part of the Commonwealth. The stamps were issued by a private postal service established for the island in 1929. The story of Lundy is explained in the circular. The denomination of the stamps were in “Puffins”…selected because of a species of bird characteristic of the island. No stamp catalog…Scott, et.al., contains a listing for approximately 300 issues by the private postal service. However, based upon John Aitchison’s 2019 Sixth Edition of “Stamps and Postal History of Lundy Island”, using his numbering system, I believe the six stamps are: 2 Puffin blue “Puffin Definitive” issued in 1929, #26 Puffin violet “Puffin Definitive” issued in 1930, #39 Puffin brown “Puffin Definitive issued in 1930, #412 Puffin green “Puffin Definitive” issued in 1930, #52 Puffin blue “Standing Puffin Definitive” issued in 1939, # 274 Puffin brown “Standing Puffin Definitive” issued in 1939, #29The stamps are mint with perfect, original gum. The circular, considering the age, is in excellent condition. Photos in listing are of actual item being offered.
