About the Author: “Ludwig Bemelmans was a painter, illustrator, and writer of more than three dozen books for both children and adults. Born in 1989 in a part of the Tyrol now known as Merano, Italy, he came to the United States in 1914 and, after spending Christmas Eve on Ellis Island, set up residence in New York City. Among his most famous books are Hotel Splendide, a fictional account of life behind the scenes at a legendary hotel, and The Blue Danube, a gentle novel about pre-war Europe.
