Description: Estate FindMae Barbee Bruening(1908-1994)San Antonio TexasArtistOil Painting We offer an oil painting by Mae Barbee Bruening (1908-1994) depicting waves crashing on the rocks found on the shoreline of Laguna Beach, California. The painting is signed “Mae Barbee” on the lower right corner and in penciled script on the reverse canvas stretcher. Undated, we estimate that the painting was probably executed in the 1940-1950 era based on limited biographical information. Born in Texas, the artist studied in Chicago, Paris and Laguna Beach. By 1947 she was an established artist living in San Antonio, Texas and was a founding member of the River Art Group. The frame measures 28” in width and 23 3/4” in height with the image measuring 19 5/8” in width and 15 5/8” in height. The stretched cloth canvas measures 20” in width and 16” in height. As seen in the photographs, tiny pinpoints of light will show when the canvas is held up to a light from behind but are not readily observed when the painting is hung on the wall. The California coastal plein aire painting by Mae Barbee Bruening is presented in very good vintage condition.
