MANISTEE & LUTHER RAILROAD HISTORY The Manistee Tram Railroad was the unincorporated logging railroad of Richard G. Peters, and extending into the woods from Eastlake, MI, serving the Peters mill at Eastlake.. The Manistee & Luther Railroad was chartered on March 26, 1886, and the road opened on May 1,1886. The directors of the Manistee & Luther were Richard G. Peters, George M. Burr, A. J. Donel, all of Manistee, MI; Henry W. Carey and J. H. Peters, of Eastlake, MI. R. G. Peters was president. The railroad was built to serve the mill of the R. G. Peters Salt & Lumber Company at Eastlake. The main line of the railroad ran from Eastlake, opposite Manistee, eastward into southern Wexford County. The mileage of the main line varied over the years, since it was chiefly a logging railroad, but was basically defined as 33 miles from Eastlake to Eleanor, a station that served the village of Hoxeyville. Passenger and freight service was provided to Hoxeyville. It was abandoned in 1915. REFERENCE 1. George W.
