Description: Aquatint on paper 17 1/4" by 19 3/4" in tasteful gold strip framing, signed in pencil at lower right corner in the margin, the subject the famous bookstalls along the Seine River in Paris, commonly called "les Bouquinistes". Robbe was a major French printmaker late in the 19th and early in the 20th century. The artist's subject matter included Paris scenes, which are his most sought after work, elegant figures in interiors, and scenes in Brittany, featuring marketplaces and common folk. Jacques Villon worked with him, and Robbe achieved great success and recognition. He is really known for his prints, rather than original drawings and paintings; and it is for brilliant advances with aquatint technique that he remains so especially appreciated to this day. Works, generally in editions of less than 100, appear frequently at auction in Europe and America. I take note of a brown stain, likely old damp stain, in the lower left center margin. Currently there is no mat. Were the piece to be properly matted, to just under the signature, most of this stain, and certainly the most noticeable portion, would be hidden. Top edge of frame shows some disturbance to the gold; not visible when hanging on the wall.
