Description: Shipping Marcel Proust REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST First U.S. editions/printings 1922-32 Eleven volume complete set of Proust's masterwork, REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST in the first U.S. edition with correct first issue points. New York: Henry Holt, Thomas Seltzer, and Albert & Charles Boni, 1922-1932. The full 11 volumes issued between 1922 and 1932 in the first U.S. edition / first printing. Given the 10 year period over which these were published, and the change of publishers, very few complete sets were assembled. The Scott Moncrieff translation consisting of: "Swann's Way" in two volumes, "Within a Budding Grove" in two volumes, "The Guermantes Way" in two volumes, "Cities of the Plain (Sodom and Gomorrah)" in two volumes, "The Captive", and "The Sweet Cheat Gone." The final volume, "The Past Recaptured" was translated by Frederick A. Blossom due to Moncrieff's death. The 11 volumes are in the original cloth bindings, they are all first printings of the first edition. Cities of the Plain was issued as a limited edition of 2000 copies in white cloth with gilt spine lettering, and our copy is hand-numbered 1455; it is housed in the bottom half of the original slipcase. New hard plastic protectors have been added to all eleven vols. Clean and tight 11 volumes with no markings. Previous owner's name on first free endpage of the final two volumes (Sweet Cheat Gone and Past Recaptured). All volumes very clean inside and out, with sharp tips and ends. Very Good or Better condition, and some volumes are Fine (Pristine). A bit of mild foxing to the second volume of Swann's Way, particularly the preliminary pages. No other foxing found in any other volumes. All hinges sound and sturdy with no binding defects. An excellent set, rare in this beautiful condition. Semi-autobiographical, and written in a stream-of-consciousness style, Marcel Proust's 3200 page masterpiece, A La Recherche du Temps Perdu was first translated into English by C.K. Scott Moncrieff as 'Remembrance of Things Past'; it was later revised in translation to 'In Search of Lost Time'. It has been called 'the greatest fiction to date.' The first volume was published in the U.S. in 1922, and the final volume in 1932. Gradually withdrawing from society, Proust worked during the nights and slept during the day until his death at the age of 51. Graham Greene named Proust, "the greatest novelist of the 20th century." Voted #4 on Daniel S. Burt's "Novel 100," a ranking of the 100 Greatest Novels of all time, and consistently high on numerous other list.
