ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Extremely Rare Circa 1920’s-30’s Color Halftone Lithograph Depicting an 18th Century Genre Scene of a Cardinal and Several Businessmen Hashing Out a Real Estate Land Dispute with Maps titled, “Settling the Boundary.” (AKA “Setting the Boundary.”), after the original painting by the well-known listed genre painter, ‘Margaret Dovaston’ (British, 1884-1954) whose printed signature appears lower right in the image corner (tough to see in dark floor area). Publisher & Print Info: The publisher was Felix Rosenstiel’s Widow & Son, Ltd., London and their inventory number, copyright, company initials & location, ‘2418/1. Copyright. F.R., London.’, appears printed lower left in the small margin area along the bottom edge just below the image, and the title, ‘Settling The Boundary.”, appears printed lower middle and the printing info, ‘Printed in England.’, appears lower right respectively. The publishing company, Felix Rosenstiel’s Widow & Son Ltd., London (British Publishers, 1880-Present [1880-1895] [1895-Present] respectively) used to be simply, Felix Rosenstiel, London, before his widow and son took the business over after his death in 1895. The company is still going strong today. The Litho is on a nice medium-weight ivory-colored coated (off-white on front) wove paper stock which has a nice light applied surface texture resembling linen canvas, to give it a more decorative feel. What’s neat is that the two ultra-tiny printing registration pinholes are barely noticeable in the upper left & right outer margin corner areas, which were used to keep the various colors of printing plates aligned (registered) when the piece was on the printing press. Interestingly, Dovaston’s original oil on canvas painting, 18” x 25”, of this scene went through auction at Bonham’s London in 2015 under the alternate title of, “Setting the Boundary” (not ‘Settling’ like our litho states) and sold for £6,250 (US $8,642), and our Litho is almost the exact size of the original painting—I tend to think that “Setting the Boundary” is likely the real title of the piece after seeing several other references online with that title, and may have been a typo perhaps… Size & Condition: The size with small margins is 19-3/16” x 25-1/16”, Image size is 18” x 24”. The Litho is in Excellent Rare+ condition for its vintage age with absolutely no color fade—rich color with incredible fine detail & tones. This Litho has been tucked away in one of our archive drawers amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light of day in all this time—it’s as beautiful as the day it was printed and is as ‘mint’ as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. No tears. Extremely minimal (only a few) ultra-tiny & faint scattered foxing specks here & there on the sheet which are only barely visible from the back. Minimal & slight small crescent-creasing scattered here & there in the image area which are hardly even noticeable and not really worth mentioning (mostly visible from the back). Other minimal creasing here & there in the outer margin areas, in the outer margin corners with associated dog-ear bends, and also along a few outer margin edges with some dents & dings here & there—all outer margin issues are completely negligible since they can easily be matted & framed out. Negligible toning of the stock from age which isn’t really even noticeable amidst the off-white color of the coated paper stock itself and is also not worth mentioning. This vintage Halftone Litho has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade.
