Madame de Sévigné (1626-96) was a French aristocrat whose correspondence is of both historical and literary significance. Most of her letters, celebrated for their wit and vividness, were addressed to her daughter, Françoise-Marguerite de Sévigné. She is revered in France as one of the great icons of 17th century literature. Octavo, six volumes, with a frontispiece portrait. In striking three-quarter red morocco over marbled paper bindings by Charles Meunier, with black morocco inlays, five raised bands, decorative gilt stamping, matching marbled endpapers, and a ribbon marker. The small bookplate of art collector and philanthropist Henry Walters (1848-1931) appears on the front pastedown in the first volume.
