Description: Lot of 16 antiquarian sewing / dressmaking instruction books by fashion pioneer Mary Brooks Picken for the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts & Sciences in Scranton, Pennsylvania. All are softcovers with stapled bindings and measure approximately 8 3/4 inches by 6 inches. Black and white illustrations. All published by the Woman's Institute or the International Textbook Co. The lot includes 13 stated first editions, most with copyright dates of 1916 but a couple from 1915: - Dresses Part 1 (No. 21 A) - Dresses Part 2 (No. 21 B) - Embroidery Stitches Part 2 (No. 7 B) - Essential Stitches Part 1 (No. 1 A-3) - Harmony of Dress (No. 11-2) - Laces Silks and Linens (No. 6) - Plain Undergarments (No. 202) - Skirts (No. 204) - Tailored and Lingerie Blouses (No. 14 A) - Tight Linings and Boning (No. 5-2) - Tissue Paper Patterns Part 1 (No. 32 A-2) - Tissue Paper Patterns Part 2 (No. 32 B) - Woolen Materials and Tailored Plackets (No. 12) There are three 1920 editions: - Children and Misses' Garments (No. 20) - Miscellaneous Garments (No. 22) - Tailored Suits, Coats, and Capes (No. 24) Conditions range from very good to poor. All of the books are complete. About half have split and/or detached covers, and a few have detached (but included) center pages. Many have the name and address of the former owner or other writing on the front or back covers, along with open and closed tears, soiling, creasing and age toning.
