Description: I have for sale a pre Civil War, 1851, award medal from the Maryland Institute For the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts that was located in Baltimore, Maryland. The medal is silver, it is two inches in diameter and in a high grade circulated condition. The medal engraver was Edward Stabler. This is a U.S. Mint medal that is listed in the Medals of the U.S. Mint, The First Century by Julian as number AM 31. The Maryland Institute For the Promotion of the Mechanic Arts was founded in 1826. In 1959 the name was changed to the Maryland Institute, College of Art. The medal obverse at the rim reads MARYLAND INSTITUTE FOR THE PROMOTION OF THE MECHANIC ARTS - BALTIMORE. In the center it shows Justice with a scale held aloft in her left hand and her right hand on a sword. With her it shows articles of commerce and ships in the background. At her feet is a ribbon that reads INDUSTRY THE MEANS PLENTY THE RESULT. On the reverse it has a wreath at the rim and at the top rim it reads AWARDED - TO it is then engraved UNCAS WOOLEN CO. - CONN. - FOR HUNGARIAN CLOAKING - W.F. & A.
