Description: Mason & Oceana #5 2-8-0 with Coach circa 1900 3' Gauge5 2-8-0 Grant Unknown. Mason & Oceana #5, by 1887. The Butters & Peters Salt & Lumber Company established a sawmill and shingle factory at a point on Pere Marquette Lake, opposite Ludington, about 1880. This location came to be known as Buttersville. By late 1883 the company was operating a 3' 0" gauge logging railroad south from Buttersville. The Mason & Oceana Railroad was chartered on August 9, 1886, and opened from Pere Marquette, MI to Crystal Valley, MI, 21 miles, on January 6, 1887. At first it was strictly a logging road. The original officers of the railroad were: Horace G. Butters, of Ludington, MI, president; Richard G. Peters, of Manistee, MI, vice president; and Marshall F. Butters, of Ludington, secretary and treasurer. Capital stock was $150,000. The line was extended to Stetson, MI, 27 miles, on January 20, 1888. The extension to Goodrich, MI, 32 miles was opened on July 1, 1901. The road was extended to Maple, MI, 40 miles from Buttersville, on June 1, 1903. Most of the Buttersville mill facilities were destroyed by fire on August 25, 1909. The facilities were not rebuilt and consequently the Mason & Oceana Railroad was abandoned on December 1, 1909.
