Mastro: obviously as a master craftsman, and De Paja, derived from the name with which he was affectionately called by friends, "Pajetta" -- because of his curly hair, and translated into a dialectal expression "de Paja". Here’s a mint condition Mastro de Paja Rhodesian shaped pipe with 360 degrees of sizzling flame grain around the bowl! With such graining, one may expect to be assured of a very sweet and dry smoking instrument. And, this piece houses a very large tobacco chamber 7/8th inches in diameter and 2 inches deep! Draft hole is center and above the bottom of the chamber. Chamber interior is very sound and very clean. There is an effortless draw. Tenon to mortise union, reinforced with an acrylic shank extension, is sound, snug and flush. Acrylic stem with a plated gold dot is a crisp jet black, bearing no marks. Pipe does not accept a filter. Due to quality graining and seasoning pipe weighs only a mere 2. 18 ounces (61.9 grams) No fills. No handling marks, but a tiny pin head spot of rim discoloration. Very small. Pipe passes a cleaner with ease. Regarding graining, the well-respected authority on the subject, Carl Ehwa, in his landmark book, Pipes & Tobaccos, writes: “When selecting briar pipes, quality of wood and workmanship and the type of graining are the prime considerations. Pipes made of dense, straight grain wood … have a tendency to absorb moisture much more slowly, which means they will smoke more sweetly and need to be rested less often. The bird's–eye, or end grain at the bottom of the bowl of a straight grain pipe absorbs moisture more quickly than other grains.
