Description: McCracken County was formed 1824 from Hickman County. It was named for Capt. Virgil McCracken of Woodford County who was killed in Battle of River Raisin near Detroit during War of 1812, McCracken County has an area of 237 square miles. The OH and TN Rivers brought industry dependent on river for transportation. The first county seat was at Wilmington in 1825 and was moved to Paducah in 1832.
