MCM 20thC CALIFORNIA WATERCOLOR MODERNIST PAINTING Muriel Backman A watercolor painting on paper titled The Lake by Muriel Backman (American, 1902-1996). The painting depicts a rural landscape scene locally known as the City of the Gods. A great vibrant landscape painting depicting large rocks on the shores of Pyramid Lake, Nevada. Signed by the artist on the lower right. The piece is unframed. On back it is pencil dated 1959. Vibrant Modernist work by this notable California woman artist who exhibited widely and with success from the 1930's through the 1950's, including at the Crocker Art Museum, the Kingsley Art Club, the Berkeley YWCA and the Santa Cruz Art League. Muriel Backman is well-listed in relevant art reference works and her work is held in public and private collections including the permanent collection of the San Francisco Public Library.
