He was born in Senigallia (Italy) on May 13, 1792 and died in the Vatican on February 7, 1878 at the age of 85. His 31-year pontificate is the longest in the history of the papacy after, according to tradition, that of Peter.Pius IX was the pope who proclaimed the dogma of the Immaculate Conception. He also convened the first Vatican Ecumenical Council, which notably defined papal infallibility. This council was interrupted when Italian troops invaded Rome. Pius IX was the last sovereign of the States of the Church, which disappeared in 1870.Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti was the son of Count Girolamo Mastai Ferretti and Countess, née Caterina Solazzi, who had eight other children. After attending the Piarist college in Volterra, he studied theology and philosophy in Rome. He was then refused entry into the noble guards because of his health (he was subject to epileptic seizures) and he continued his studies at the Roman seminary.Ordained a priest in 1819, he was appointed spiritual director of a famous Roman orphanage. In 1823, Pius VII sent him to Chile as auditor of Mgr Muzi, apostolic delegate. In 1825, upon his return, he was appointed by Leo XII canon of Santa Maria in Via Lata and director of the San Michele hospital. In 1827 he was made Archbishop of Spoleto. In 1832 he was transferred to the diocese of Imola, taking the personal title of archbishop.Pope Gregory XVI created him cardinal in pectore during the consistory of December 23, 1839. Its creation was published on December 14, 1840. He received the hat of cardinal-priest from the title of Santi Marcellino e Pietro.PontificatePhoto of Pius IXby the D'Alessandri Brothers, ca 1865On June 16, 1846, the conclave following the death of Gregory XVI took place. Cardinal Luigi Lambruschini, Gregory XVI's secretary of state, is the favourite of the conservatives while Cardinal Mastai Ferretti is the favourite of the liberals.Cardinal Lambruschini won the majority of votes in the first round, but failed to garner the two-thirds of the votes required to be elected pope.Cardinal von Gaisruck, Archbishop of Milan, arrived too late to rescind the exclusive pronounced by the Emperor of Austria Ferdinand I, following the policy of Metternich, against Cardinal Mastai Ferretti; the latter, having collected two thirds of the votes, accepts the tiara and then takes the name “Pius IX”, in homage to Pius VII.The support is not for sale.Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti was the son of Count Girolamo Mastai Ferretti and Countess, née Caterina Solazzi, who had eight other children.
