Mehmed Şevkı studied calligraphy in Istanbul from a young age, learned thuluth-nesih and rika' from his uncle Mehmed Hulûsi Efendi (d. 1874) and received his ijazah at the age of twelve. He continued his studies and found his style, which will be known as "Şevkı School", inspired by the works of exceptional calligraphers such as Hâfız Osman (d. 1698) and Mustafa Râkım (d. 1826). He taught at the school where military clerks were trained, gave private lessons to student groups, and at the same time continued his main duty at the Letter Office of the Ministry of War. Mehmed Şevkı's meşk for syllabus (working with individual letters) and mürekkebât (working with letter combinations) is given in facsimile from the originals in the Topkapı Palace Museum Library, in the following part, the Elif Kasidesi with the ink kept in the Ekrem Hakkı Ayverdi collection at the Kubbealtı Culture and Arts Foundation. Facsimiles of are presented. In the last chapter, there is a text of Hilye-i Nebevî, prepared in this way, which Mehmed Şevkı Efendi gave importance to as an ink practice, again with a facsimile from the original in the Topkapı Palace Museum Library.
