Text description beneath the picture (subject to any spelling errors due to the OCR program used) MERCERS' HALL.—The Mercers are traced back by an eminent historian as early as 1172. Hence this is the oldest of the City Guilds. At the present time they are patrons of three livings, managers of several schools and hospitals, and possess a large number of exhibitions to the two Universities. The chief entrance to this famous hail is in Ironmonger Lane. The raised hall itself is supported by Doric columns, the space below being open on one Side and forming an extensive piazza, at the extremity whereof is the chapel. A high flight of stairs leads from this piazza to the hail, which is a very lofty apartment, handsomely wainscoted, and ornamented with Doric pilasters. As may. be judged from this-view the Drawing-room of this Company is a very beautiful apartment. It is decorated with rich carvings, the ceiling being embellished with two large paintings, surrounded by smaller ones.
