Description: Merv Slotnick (1941) is a listed abstract expressionist painter and printmaker who was born in Lansing, MI. He received degrees from Adrian College and Central Michigan University and took courses at Michigan State University. He currently resides in Maine. The artist's earliest influences were the abstract expressionist painters of the 50's, especially Robert Motherwell. He is known for creating paintings on paper and for sometimes incorporating non-artistic materials.Although his work greatly shows the influence of abstract expressionism. today he is also considered a "conceptualist". Like Robert Rauschenberg, he moves in and out of different ways of making art. In the past 30 years, the influence of Cy Twombly is unmistakeable. The artwork for sale is a small original abstract expressionist watercolor featuring red and black paint on a white background. The piece measures 4" high by 6" across. The artwork is initialed "MS" at the lower right (photo 2) and is signed "Slotnick" in pencil on the back (photo 3). Date is unknown but it was likely done in the 1980's. Simple and elegant, this original painting is as engaging as the larger works of the abstract expressionist were in the 1950's. Like a delicately rendered Oriental caligraphic work, this little masterpiece has a soulful quality and appeal.
