Description: Here we have a beautiful explosion of no-holds-barred noise from power electronics shaman Masami Akita, aka MERZBOW: Houjoue, a six-CD UK import box released in 2005 on the Dirter label, issued in this CD edition (with 23 minutes of additional material) a year later. This entire set seethes with the intensity and sonic mayhem you want and expect from Akita – churning the air into molten lead, scattering all dogs and cats within a 200 foot radius and punching holes in your noggin with the pure power of SOUND. We at Baron Elmo Enterprises have enjoyed many a Merzbow disc at our afternoon teas, and most of our team would agree that Houjoue is one of his most brutal outings to date. Masami’s electronics only let up long enough to relax into the occasional threatening rumble, while the remaining nine-tenths of the disc consists of howling wind-tunnel roars; jittery pulses that twitch like frayed, screaming nerves; frenzied electronic squiggles that race from speaker to speaker... get the picture? This is one disc that is more than capable of breaking your speakers, your windows and your lease in one shot – especially when unleashed at the appropriate (high, higher, highest!) volume. Interestingly enough, the track titles seem to indicate (no notes are included) that Houjoue is a tribute to the meat-free lifestyle. (Akita is a fervent animal rights activist as well as a vegetarian.) Everyone interested in envelope-pushing sonics needs at least a couple of Merzbow titles in their music library, and Houjoue will do some very satisfactory damage. Sadly, this was only issued in an edition of 1000 copies, and they sold out fest. Don’t miss the chance to terrorize the Normals with the awesome might of Merzbow! As to condition, five of the six discs are in beautiful, near-mint condition, while Disc Five is very scuffed up.
