Description: Michael Elkan Studio Executive Desk Bookends with Clock We are pleased and proud to offer for sale this very rare piece from this world renowned artist. Unfortunately this fabulous artist is no longer with us having passed away on July 27, 2014. Mostly self-taught, Michael built a very successful American craft business making boxes, one-of-a-kind sculptures and furniture. For 25 years his work was shown in the most prestigious, juried, national craft shows and exhibited in galleries from The Real Mother Goose in Oregon to Appalachian Spring in Washington D C. His work was featured in the American Craft Museum, the Smithsonian Craft Show and in numerous collections, including that of well-known textile designer, Jack Lenor Larson. In 1995, Michael wrote a book, a tribute to the wonderful material, people, and processes involved in his creative woodworking business. Michael’s unique and gifted artwork is becoming more and more difficult to find. Those who are lucky enough to actually own one of his beautiful pieces are very fortunate to be able to look upon these fabulous pieces on a daily basis. We are not qualified or knowledgeable enough about various woods to know exactly what type of wood this is. Pryor to retiring to Mexico in 2002, Michael ran his studio near Silver Falls, Oregon. Michael always used the materials and woods that were near him. It is even stated that Michael went as far as to plant many trees. Therefore we would think that this wood is native to Oregon. Instructions for the clock are included in the sealed plastic bag. These include how to replace the battery and setting the time. There is a new battery in the clock, so it should last for several years. The instructions specify the type of battery needed for replacement. The clock lifts out easily by gently getting a fingernail under the edge on each side. The books shown in the photos are for demonstration purposes only and are not included in the sale.
