Description: MID-19TH CENTURY AMERICAN DATED 1866 ANTIQUE HAND COLORED MAP OF OCEANICA, EXHIBITING IT'S VARIOUS DIVISION ISLAND GROUPS IN ASIA By: SAMUEL AUGUSTUS MITCHELL JR. (CARTOGRAPHER & GEOGRAPHER)(Dated 1866)American mid-19th century antique hand colored large folio maps DIMENSIONS: With matting: 20" Width x 16" Height Map only: 15 ¼" Width x 12 ½" Height DESCRIPTION:There are no tears, paper loss, noticeable stains, permutations, corner folds, rips, repairs, unsightly and non-archival use of mending tape or any subsequent 'in-painting.' The map is nearly as it was originally constituted. The only unfortunate thing is that the paper map was at some point, most likely when it was matted with the contemporary green mat board system the map is currently in, laid down upon the backing board with adhesive. The adhesive appears to have been archival, as there are no adhesive 'burns,' tanning or unsightly discoloration often associated with glue and other adhesives, endemic to laid down paper. The map was the product of the American cartographer and geographer Augustus Mitchell Jr. The map has a characteristic meandering ivy floral border surrounding the entire map, with decorative corners. The map features hand-coloring with watercolor paint in red-violet, green, yellow, crimson red and light cobalt blue hand-painted colors, allowing the viewer to more readily see the geographical divisions within the map. An increasingly quite difficult to find mid-19th century hand-colored map of Oceanica by the American cartographer Augustus Mitchell Jr. CONDITION:Good to Very Good overall antique condition. (Unframed but matted.)
