Description: Mid-19th Century CHILDRENS LEATHER Cobblestone Shoes, Wood Soles, Brass Tacks Click images to enlarge Description ANTIQUE CHILDREN'S LEATHER SHOES Wonderful pair of antique mid-19th century Civil War era children's hand made leather shoes measuring about 6" in length. Made of hand cut, stiffened leather with pierced lace holes, shoes have sturdy carved wooden soles with metal reinforcement around the sole edge (similar to horse shoes) - uppers have been mounted to the soles with tiny hammered brass tacks - these appear to be hand made as well. Design was intended to facilitate walking on cobblestones. Condition is very nice with a short crack on the back edge of one and a bit of loss to the back edge of the other - probably from pulling them on and off. There no longer retain their laces, and the leather is very stiff and non pliable - no separation or damage at the soles. I think these are so charming and unusual - probably European in origin - I've heard them referred to as peasant shoes - they are small and sweet - a wonderful addition to any collection or display!
