Here is an original 19th Century Carte-De-Visite CDV photograph of legendary midget performers, “General” Tom Thumb (Charles Sherwood Stratton), his wife Lavinia Warren and a mysterious borrowed baby. The Strattons had no children. Different babies were used over time. All three figures are nicely composed as a result of showman P. T. Barnum's promotional skills. This photo is of better quality than most (often quite faded), with rich, deep tones, nice contrast and emulsion. Tom Thumb has been referred to as a Midget and also a Dwarf. Some describe him as being really tiny, while others claim this to be pure hype, insisting he was really much taller than his promoted heights claimed. In any case, there is no doubt that this man is a legend. One of the most popular performers of all time. The photo is in pretty good vintage condition with only some normal expected age wear. Sort of a musical baby act (similar to “musical chairs”). Tom Thumb and Lavinia Warren belonged to that unique group of Sideshow Royalty.
