DEPENDING ON WHO YOU ASK, THIS IS SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS A DOUBLE FORE EDGE PAINTING, AND SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS A SPLIT FORE EDGE PAINTING. FOR SIMPLICITIES SAKE, I AM REFERRING TO IT AS A SPLIT / DOUBLE FORE EDGE PAINTING. WHEN YOU OPEN THE BOOK TO IT'S CENTER, YOU CAN SEE THE PAINTINGS ON EITHER SIDE. THEN, BY GENTLY FANNING THE PAGES, THE PAINTING IS REVEALED IN MORE DETAIL. WHEN YOU CLOSE THE BOOK, THE PAINTINGS DISAPPEAR. THE PAINTINGS WERE PAINTED BY FANNING THE PAGES, AND PAINTING ON THE VERY TIPS OF THE FANNED PAGES. THEN, AFTER THE PAINT WAS DRY, THE BOOK WOULD HAVE BEEN CLOSED AND A GOLD GILDING APPLIED TO THE FORE EDGES.)PROVINANCE: From the estate of Sir Harry Page, Manchester, England. Beautiful dentelle gilt design on inside edge of boards, and marbled endpapers. All edges Gilt! CONDITION:NEAR FINE CONDITION!!!Binding is tight and secure, with NO weakness! Spine is securely attached to boards, hinges are secure! All pages of text are clean and bright. Minor Imperfections:A few very faint rub marks, that are difficult to see! A few very minor dents on edges of boards. 1 scratch on back of board with no loss of color or leather.(See pictures # 4, 7 & 12.)Endpapers, title page & engraving pages, as well as the pages facing the engravings, have some Faint discolorations. (see pictures # 4, 5, & 10) Marbled endpaper at front of book is slightly "off set".(see picture # 8)Please look at all the pictures.
