Description: Milwaukee, WI Civil War era CDV woman full length w/ big sleeve, W.H. Sherman This lovely lady stands elegantly behind a prop chair, one arm folded and the other at her side showing us the fashion of her sleeve. Printed on reverse is: "W.H. Sherman Photographer, 385 Main Street Milwaukee" Sherman was one of Milwaukee's most prolific early photographers. He was active in Milwaukee beginning in 1860. He moved his studio to this Main Street address in 1865. In 1870 the street would be renamed Broadway, so this dates the photo rather precisely. Some fading to image. Yellowing to image. Shadow at top where photo was likely in an album or frame. Light soiling to image and card. Top edge has been trimmed. Card measures about 4 x 2.375 inches, photo is about 3.75 x 2.25 inches. My mother was a photographer who collected antique photos of all types for years. As I am settling her estate, I will be listing these photos as quickly as I am able. There are hundreds of photos to go through, and I am trying to match any information my mother may have left with individual photos. Unfortunately, Mom had dementia at the end of her life and wasn't able to tell me much about her collection. She had done a lot of research into photographers and individual pieces in her collection, and often, but not always, filed her research with the photo(s). I search for more information on the internet and in history books, but it's a slow process and it will take me a long time to complete the sorting and selling process. I am always happy to combine shipping on multiple purchases, so please check out my other listings. I will ship as soon as I receive payment.
