This Hummel depicts two young boys matching off to war during WWII. The Volunteers Hummel is just one of many that gave Sister Maria I. Hummel a reputation as being an anti-Nazi activist, and why Hitler hated her to the point where he even shut down Hummel production for a period of time. According to Collectors Weekly, Berta Hummel used her seemingly naïve art to tweak the Nazis before and during the war. She drew the ire of Hitler himself when she created “The Volunteers,” a painting depicting boys being sent off to war with the line, “Dear Fatherland, let there be peace!” Hitler and other Nazi officials reportedly objected to German youth being depicted as “brainless sissies” with “hydrocephalic heads and club feet.” How The Volunteers Figurine came to be: A young man who had just been drafted into the army wanted to meet the Sister. She accidentally met him in the hallway of the Convent and not having seen a soldier yet, she inquired as to how the buckle closed and which side the gun-belt was worn.
