FORMAT Paperback LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description This book addresses basic questions including: What is the mixed methods research process? How is mixed methods research defined? Why is it used? What designs are available? How does mixed methods research intersect with other research approaches? What is mixed methods research quality? How is mixed methods shaped by personal, interpersonal, and social contexts? By focusing on the topics, perspectives, and debates occurring in the field of mixed methods research, the book helps students, scholars, and researchers identify, understand, and participate in these conversations to inform their own research practice. Author Biography Vicki L. Plano Clark (Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln) is an assistant professor in the Quantitative and Mixed Methods Research Methodologies concentration of Educational Studies at the University of Cincinnati. Her teaching focuses on foundations of research methodologies and mixed methods research, including a two-semester mixed methods sequence and special topics courses. As a methodologist specializing in mixed methods research, her scholarship aims to delineate useful designs for conducting mixed methods research, examine procedural issues associated with these designs, and consider larger questions about the contexts for the adoption and use of mixed methods. She has also co-authored several books with John W. Creswell including Designing and Conducting Mixed Methods Research (SAGE, 2007, 2011), The Mixed Methods Reader (SAGE, 2008), and Understanding Research: A Consumers Guide (Pearson Education, 2010, 2015). She was the founding Managing Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and currently serves as an Associate Editor. In 2011, she co-led the development of Best Practices for Mixed Methods in the Health Sciences for NIHs Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research. She is a founding co-editor of SAGEs Mixed Methods Research Series. As an applied research methodologist, Vicki also engages in research and evaluation projects on a wide array of topics such as the management of cancer pain, the identity development of STEM graduate students, the professional development of teachers of Chinese, and the effectiveness of school reform initiatives. Before joining the University of Cincinnati, she was the director of the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research, a service and research unit that provides methodological support for proposal development and funded projects at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Originally trained in physics, she spent 12 years developing innovative curricular materials for introductory physics as the Physics Laboratory Manager at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Nataliya V. Ivankova (Ph.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln; M.P.H., University of Alabama at Birmingham) holds a dual appointment as Associate Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration (School of Health Professions) and the Department of Acute, Chronic and Continuing Care (School of Nursing) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She teaches graduate research methods courses, including a two-semester sequence in mixed methods research, mixed methods applications in community-based action research, and advanced courses in qualitative research design. Her expertise is in qualitative inquiry and mixed methods research and their applications across disciplines. Her long-standing interest is in the use of mixed methods in community-based participatory action research, implementation science and translational research, which resulted in the book Mixed Methods Applications in Action Research: From Methods to Community Action (2015, Sage Publications). In addition to teaching, Nataliya mentors doctoral students in their dissertation research, and post-doctoral fellows and junior faculty in their qualitative and mixed methods funded research projects. She serves as consultant, co-investigator, and methodologist on externally and internally funded projects in education, health care, nursing, and health behavior. She is a founding Co-editor of SAGEs Mixed Methods Research Series and serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and Qualitative Research Editor for the American Journal of Health Behavior. For several years, she chaired Special Interest Group Mixed Methods Research within American Educational Research Association. Currently she is actively involved with Mixed Methods International Research Association as Chair of Communication & Marketing Committee. Prior to coming to UAB, Nataliya was Research Projects Coordinator in the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During the first eighteen years of her professional career she served as a member of the faculty and also as Dean for Admissions at the Izmail State University in Ukraine. It embraces a broad view of the landscape of mixed methods research (MMR) and provides the reader with a one-stop shop for operationalizing MMR. I believe it can serve as a field guide to the broad and often confusing world of MMR." -- Theresa A. Beery"I appreciate seeing that the author(s) provided up-to-date and the most cutting-edge references on mixed methods for the reader to seek out, as needed." -- Daphne C. Watkins"I loved the tables and textboxes. They were full of so much information and very useful to reflect on as one reads the narrative." -- Deborah Gioia"It is kind of refreshing to see this new theoretical perspective for MMR that goes beyond the acknowledgement that MMR fills a void in the field of methodology as following or being viewed only from the philosophical lens of pragmatism…Their content…represents yet another viable theoretical perspective beyond pragmatism" -- Arturo Olivárez, Jr. Review Quote "[This text] provides an excellent starting point to engage in the field (and key debates) concerning mixed methods as practice and theory."
