Victoria and Albert - a love of empire and art As Oueen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland - later Empress of India - and Prince Consort of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Victoria and Albert ruled not only an empire, but an era. Their identities were deeply embedded in the ideals of their time. The Victorian era, the term defining Victoria's reign of 63 years, owed its very character to its namesake's influence and example. Together with Prince Albert, she ushered in a new age of technology, economic power and culture in the Empire. The high point of this innovative period was marked by the legendary Great Exhibition of 1851 in London's Crystal Palace and the founding of several cultural institutions in the area of South Kensington, including the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Albert Hall, which still prevail as leaders of the cultural world todav. The Montblanc Patron of Art Homage to Victoria & Albert Limited Edition 100 isdedicated to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and their passion for music and art. The couple edition brings the era of the Montblanc Patron of Art Editions, which began in 1992, to an end after almost 30 years. The bonds of romantic love Prince Albert and Victoria were first introduced to each other in 1836, one year before Victoria's accession to the throne upon the death of her uncle, King William IV. It was an encounter that would eventually lead to their mutual happiness in marriage. Wedding bells rang for one of the most famous brides and grooms of the 19th century on 10 February 1840. The ceremony was a grand occasion full of opulence and symbolism. Victoria's wedding dress, made of white satin trimmed with delicate lace and an 18-foot train, established the tradition of the white-clothed bride that continues today. The Limited Edition 100 celebrates the romantic love between Victoria and Albert with a mother-of-pearl barrel combined with Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold fittings inspired by the colours of Victoria's wedding dress. Nine lines on the cone symbolise their nine children and the importance of family to the queen and her consort. The sentence 'Unis à jamais' (united forever) engraved on the cone is taken from a ring given to Victoria by her half-sister as a wedding gift, while a bracelet Victoria received from her mother when the engagement was announced inspired the intertwined-hearts-shaped amethyst in the cone. The engraved pattern around the cone is a traditional design found in the bedroom in Kensington Palace, where Princess Victoria grew up. United in the practice and promotion of art Victoria and Albert were united by more than affairs of state and their mutual love. The royal pair also shared a passion for art and music and spent many hours playing together and receiving instruction in various art techniques.Prince Albert excelled at designing jewellery for his wife, knowing that she would se his eternal devotion expressed in every beautifully set jewel. One motif he used in several different pieces was the orange blossom - the flower she wore at her wedding. Since the language of flowers was not only a popular pastime of the Victorian era but also often important to the royal pair's choice of symbols, the handcrafted Au 750 solid gold champagne-tone gold-coated nib of the Limited Edition 100 is engraved with a pansy, representing loving thoughts. The German salutation Theuerste innigst geliebte Victoria (Dearest deeply loved Victoria), written by Albert in a note to Victoria expressing his greataffection and love on the day they became engaged, decorates the forepart as an engraving. Visions in iron and glass - the Great Exhibition 1851 witnessed a triumphant celebration of art and industry from all over the world: the legendary Great Exhibition, largely initiated and organised by Prince Albert. The first international display of its kind, the Great Exhibition set benchmarks that would be hard to surpass. The idea of bringing together all the nations of the world in a peaceable presentation of the arts and technologies was as visionary as the Crystal Palace built to house it. Constructed from cast iron and glass, it was raised in the middle of London's Hyde Park in only nine months using a modular construction system which was revolutionary for the time. After the exhibition ended, the structure was disassembled with equal efficiency and moved to a new location to be put to a different use. Flooded with light from the glass walls and ceilings and integrating the giant trees that had stood in the park, the vast interior halls formed a majestic backdrop to the displays. The Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold cap is decorated with a guilloche recalling the arches of the Crystal Palace and set with Victoria's favoured turquoise stones. The finely engraved profiles of Victoria and Albert inserted in the cap recall the medals distributed during the Great Exhibition of 1851. A center of culture for the city After the ground-breaking success of the Great Exhibition, Prince Albert pressed for the profits to be use to develop a culture district in London with museums, colleges and academies. In 1857, the royal pair opened the South Kensington Museum, renamed the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1899. Today, the original mission of the museum remains: to make the fruits of research, science and art accessible to as wide a public as possible. Several objects were gifted to the museum by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the 1850s and reflect their love of art and design. Celebrating the royal couple's devotion to aesthetic detail, a tiny replica of the queen's sceptre serves as the clip of the edition. Another part of the royal regalia, the small crown so deeply associated with the image of Queen Victoria that it was placed on her coffin after her death, - and which is today displayed in the Victoria and Albert Museum - is recreated in royal blue lacquer inthe cap top and set with the Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl. As a symbol of their deep affection for one another, an orange blossom pattern is modelled out of the Au 750 solid champagne-tone gold detachable cap ring since Victoriachose orange blossom as her only floral wedding adornment. The other side of the ring depicts Victoria's and Albert's linked hands as painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter in a typical 'love token' of the era. The blue sapphire at the end of the clip refers to a coronet Prince Albert designed for Queen Victoria in 1840, the year they married.
