Description: The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo is a 6th-century church in Ravenna, Italy. The sumptuous glass, gold foil, and stone mosaics that cover the walls of the nave of the church reflect the dominant role that mosaics had assumed in the religious architecture of the Christian East. This poster is a beautiful reproduction of the famous mosaic of the three Magi on a gold field at the end of the Procession of the Virgins in the basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, built by King Theoderic (493–526). The episode with the three Magi was inserted in a moment succeeding the Ostrogothic reign, after the Byzantine conquest of Ravenna in 540. Sumptuously dressed like Byzantine courtiers with Phrygian caps, the Magi offer their gifts with veiled hands and are distinguished at the top by their name in Latin: Balthazar, Melchior and Gaspar. The poster was printed using offset lithographic ink for color fidelity and has been stored flat, protected from light. Ships in carefully packed art tube to protect edges.
