Description: This is "Mozart His Character, His Work" by Alfred Einstein. Arthur Mendel and Nathan Broder translated the text to English. This is a vintage volume; 1945 first edition, fourth printing. This book is hardcover with the original dust jacket. Oxford University Press is the publisher; copyright is 1945. The book opens with a Preface written by the author and dated July, 1944. There are five sections: The Man, The Musician, The Instrumental Works, The Vocal Works and Opera. These are followed by a Catalogue of Works and an Index of Names. The book measures 9 1/2 by 6 1/4 inches and has 492 pages. The cover is covered in burgundy cloth with gold printing. All text on the spine is also in the gilt printing. There are 6 black and white plates throughout the book. These are dated and sourced in a listing in the front of the book. The dust jacket is normal weight paper with artwork in brown tones and the title in white decorative script. The back of the dust jacket contains several comments about the work from noted authorities. This book is in Very Good condition and has been stored with care in a smoke-free, pet-free home. The book cover has good depth of color and the gilded script is like new. There is light shelf wear along the lower edge. Outer corners are slightly worn or bumped. The spine looks new throughout its length with only creases in places along the upper and lower edges. The binding is snug. The dust jacket has good color and no extraneous markings. It does have chips and imperfections along the upper and lower edges. Also, there is a 1-inch tear along the fold at the upper corner of the front. Inside the book is like new. The ivory-toned pages are free of any markings, tears or creases. (the slight sepia shade in the photos is from unsatisfactory lighting and not actually present on the page.) There is a bookplate with the name of a former owner just inside the front cover and there is a stamp at the bottom of the front endpaper: OXB524. Also there is an ID stamp inside the back cover in the upper corner.
