Description: MY REMINISCENCES OF THE ANGLO-BOER WAR GENERAL BEN VILJOEN C. STRUIK: CAPE TOWN 1973 22 x 14 cm. 332 pp + plates + fold-out map. HB/DJ Limited edition. Number 210 of 1000. First published 1902. Africana collectanea series Volume XLIV In spite of the fact that General Ben Viljoen (Assistant Commandant-General of the Transvaal Forces and Member for Johannesburg in the Transvaal Volksraad) describes hiruself as "a simple Afrikander" and says "I lay no claim to any literary ability", this book, first published in 1902, makes most interesting reading. It is characterised by the author's fairness and a notable lack of rancour. On four occasions the author was deprived of his notes and diaries and has therefore had to rely to a great extent on his memory for details of exact names and dates. He describes with frankness and equanimity the battles and skirmishes in which he and his men fought and his experiences during the War. There are fascinating chapters on the execution of a traitor, the destruction of trains, the capture of "hussars" and a light-hearted description of Christmas and New Year celebrations in the veld. General Viljoen concludes his book with his capture when two of his adjutants were killed near Lydenburg. He describes the humiliation he felt when he was shipped on board the "Britannica" to St. Helena and speaks with dissatisfaction of the treatment he received there under Colonel Price. The Times:—"General Ben Viljoen's book is in many ways the best book on the Boer side that has yet appeared. It is written by a man who possesses considerable idea of style, abundant and irrepressible good humour, a sense of fairness towards his opponents, and a very good military judgement."
