The JNR class Kumu-2000 was originally built by Nippon Sharyo in 1963 as a heavy capacity car named the JNR class Shimu-2000. It was owned by Daihatsu and registered to the JNR. In December 1965, it was reclassified as an autorack in accordance with the revision of the JNR’s title regulations, and the name was also changed to class Kumu-2000.
