Description: Farthest North. Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Fram" 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen, by Dr. Fridtjof Nansen. In two volumes, published by Harper & Brothers, New York and London, 1897. "About 120 Full-page and Numerous Text Illustrations, 16 Colored Plates in Facsimile from Dr. Nansen's Own Sketches, Etched Portrait, Photogravures, and 4 Maps." Maps and map pockets are at front and back pasted-downs of Vol I. Four pages of ads at the back of Vol II. Very good plus, first edition books. Small ex-lib stamps on both copyright pages, and faint stamp on upper external page edges, difficult to see against the gilt, no other indications. Dark olive/gray cloth covered boards with gilt stamped lettering, gilt, silver, red, and green-stamped nautical decorated front panels. Gilt lettering and graphics on spines. Upper page edges are gilt. Vol I has partial glass ring stains on front panel, a small dark stain and faint scuffs along the lower edge on the back panel; back panel of Vol II has several scuffs down the center and along the lower edge. Upper and lower edges and tips at head and tail of board spines are scuffed, Vol I has a 1/8" vertical tear near the upper front corner and the lower edge has a horizontal crease; the front corners at head and tail of Vol II are slightly frayed. Fore-edge tips are minimally scuffed. The title page on Vol II is separated from gutter but held by the tissue-guard of frontispiece. Lower edge of Vol II has a damp stain with most impact to lower margins of pp. 403-421, see photo of pps. 416-417 above, which shows the worst of the damage to margins.
