The National Geographic Magazine was first published in 1888, being the official journal of the National Geographic Society (founded just 9 months prior to the magazine's first release). According to Wikipedia, the magazine has a worldwide circulation in 32 languages of almost 9 million. The cover's iconic yellow border emerged only gradually over the years. The first illustrated cover appeared in July 1942, showing the US flag, though regularly illustrated covers didn't appear until 1959. While the covers show a little bit of their age, the inside pages of these 40-60 year old magazines are in GREAT condition and overall they are in surprisingly solid shape. In fact I'd hate to get whacked in the head with one of these as that would really hurt! I would describe the condition of the inner pages to be "Excellent" overall. I recently attended an estate sale with my girlfriend and among the items was a stack of National Geographic's from the 1950's, 1960's & 70's. After asking for a box, we started going through the pile and picked out Pre-1970 examples that were fully intact and everything on the front & back covers and spine was readable. A number had just deteriorated from age and were falling apart, pieces of the covers were missing or pages were falling out.
