The National Geographic Magazine was first published in 1888, being the official journal of the National Geographic Society (founded just 9 months prior to the magazine's first release). According to Wikipedia, the magazine has a worldwide circulation in 32 languages of almost 9 million. The cover's iconic yellow border emerged only gradually over the years. The first illustrated cover appeared in July 1942, showing the US flag, though regularly illustrated covers didn't appear until 1959. While the covers DO show a little bit of their age, and some have small repairs with scotch tape here and there, the inside pages of these 75-95 year old magazines are in GREAT condition and overall they are in surprisingly solid shape. In fact I'd hate to get whacked in the head with one of these as that would really hurt! If I had to choose one word to described the condition of the inner pages it would have to be "excellent." I don't think anyone has read these magazines in a VERY long time and they probably just spent most of their existence stacked in a pile or on a shelf somewhere until I happened across them in a church thrift store very recently. Oddly enough, my girlfriend & I were just killing time waiting for something to be repaired by a local shoemaker in a nearby town on Long Island and while taking a short walk we found the above mentioned thrift shop. A number had just deteriorated from age and were falling apart, pieces of the covers were missing or pages were falling out.
