Artist Julian Martinez Born: 1897 - San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico Died: 1943 - San Ildefonso Pueblo, New Mexico Julian Martinez (1897-1943) was active/lived in New Mexico. Julian Martinez is known for Abstract animal-figure painting and pottery design motifs. Julián Martínez, also known as Pocano, was a San Ildefonso Pueblo potter, painter, and the patriarch of a family of Native American ceramic artists in the United States. Julián Martinez “Pocano” (Coming of the Spirits) was born in San Ildefonso Pueblo in New Mexico, and died in San Ildefonso Pueblo. He is perhaps best known for the designs he painted on his wife Maria's famous pottery. Martinez had no formal art training. He was the father of Tony Martinez (Popovi Da), also a well known Pueblo artist. Julian Martinez, the husband of acclaimed San Ildefonso Pueblo potter Maria Martinez, was what one would today call a true "renaissance man". In addition to painting, Martinez listed his occupations as a "farmer, laborer, janitor [for the Museum of New Mexico], and pottery designer", as well as serving as the governor for San Ildefonso Pueblo. Known primarily for his paintings on his wife's pottery, his works on paper are considered rare, simply because he didn't have the time to create a significant number of them. Julián Martinez was an artist who was born, lived most of his life, and died at the small but artistically rich San Ildefonso Pueblo. He is perhaps best known for painting designs onto the pottery vessels created by his wife—the famous San Ildefonso potter Maria Martinez. He painted works on paper, too, and did so successfully despite receiving no formal art education. He was the father of Popovi Da and the grandfather of Tony Da, both of whom went on to become famous and successful artists themselves. Martinez was an important part of two major artistic movements: the beginnings of both Black-on-black San Ildefonso pottery and traditional "flat style" pueblo painting. Martinez passed away in 1943. Martinez' paintings were among those selected by Mary Jane Colter to decorate the La Fonda Hotel in Santa Fe, New Mexico. He received several commissions for murals, which can be seen at the Santa Fe Indian School. The collection "Pueblo Indian Painting” was originally published by C. Szwedzicki, 1929 Nice (France). This copy is a republished, licensed print by Bell Editions, Santa Fe, 1979. A now-famous portfolio of silk-screened prints was first published in France in 1929 with only 500 original copies. Then, in 1979, Bell Editions, Inc. of Santa Fe NM published a facsimile edition of the 1929 edition. These prints are rare reproductions of the original paintings and are meant to depict life as seen and experienced by Native Americans. This print is one of many that Louis Gonzales created illustrating Pueblo life and symbols. The size of this limited edition landscape orientation print is 19.50" x 15.50" on stiff heavy paper and is printed by six-color offset lithography. Please see the other two prints in this series available in my store. The corners of this print show wear. There is a dark water drop mark on the paper in the top center region. There is a small gouge mark on the right hand side of the paper along with crease marks (defects). Depending upon how you choice to mat and frame this print, the defects could be covered. Please see photos for condition. Priced accordingly. We pack with care. SPEEDY SHIPPING!
