In the foreground are the houses of the natives, built of matting and reeds, and raised off the ground as a precaution against fever. The enclosures round the houses are made of the inevitable bamboo, the most serviceable and adaptable of all vegetable products. The British North Borneo Company has recently shown much activity; and, among other good works, has at length succeeded in adding to the stock of good tobacco in the world. The capital of British North Borneo is Sandakan, which possesses a good harbour.
