For a record, we grade on three criteria: surface noise, luster and abrasions like scuff and scratch marks. For a record cover or sleeve, we grade on three criteria: general wear (including writing, tears or foxing), ring wear and seam wear/tears. The grade will reflect the absence of and/or presence of these criteria. To better understand our grading, note the following:A Mint Record/Record Cover Grade is reserved exclusively for records that are still manufacturer sealed; in our opinion, that is the only way this grading can be accurately applied.A Near Mint Record Grade is reserved exclusively for a record that plays through as if it is brand new, with no surface noise, good luster and no abrasions; essentially, this is a Mint grading but for the fact that the record has been played.A Near Mint Record Cover Grade is reserved exclusively for a cover that has no discernable wear; oftentimes, these covers will still be in their original shrink wrap.Records and Record Covers that are graded between VG+ and Poor have some level of the grading criteria present (i.e., some surface noise, seam wear on top spine, etc.).WHAT IS THE JEWEL CITY DIFFERENCE … Our commitment to proper record restoration and accurate record grading makes us stand above most other resellers. First, we acquire records from private sellers, estate sales and thrift stores that are as well-preserved and well-cared-for as possible. Second, if a record requires it, we deep-clean it with our Pro-Ject VC-S2 ALU Record Cleaning Machine. It’s not unusual that we find vinyl that has been so well-cared-for by its previous owners that it does not require cleaning; this will be noted in our product description. Third, we handle and play each record with great care. We use cotton, archival-grade gloves while handling vinyl. Before playing each side of a record, we clean it with both an anti-static brush and a Zerostat anti-static device. We play through all 33rpm and 45rpm records on a Rega Planar 6 turntable with a Hana SH cartridge; the stylus is cleaned with the LP#9 Stylus Cleaner after play on each side. Fourth, all shipments (unless the size or quantity of purchase dictates) are shipped in vinyl record cardboard mailers; the contents inside the mailer are wrapped in bubble wrap to ensure additional protection during shipping.
